Oscar News: ‘Amadeus,’ ‘Persona,’ ‘Being John Malkovich,’ Rare Poster Paintings

On July 6, the academy announced that actors F. Murray Abraham, Tom Hulce and Christine Ebersole will join director Milos Forman and production designer Patrizia Von Brandenstein in the “Monday Nights With Oscar” (MNWO) screening of “Amadeus” on July 16 at 7 p.m.
Shot in Prague, “Amadeus” is loosely based on the relationship between 18th century composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri.
The screening will show at at the Academy Theater, which is located at 111 E. 59th St. in New York City. Tickets for the screening are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
On July 5, the academy announced that “Persona” and “Being John Malkovich” will screen as a double feature of psychological explorations on film on July 20 at 7 p.m.
The screening will show at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, which is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members. A single ticket will admit individuals to both features. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Showcasing 150 rarely seen original movie poster paintings, the academy’s new book entitled “Now Playing: Hand-Painted Poster Art From the 1910s Through the 1950s” offers a glimpse into a world of cinema art that until recently was mostly forgotten.
The book, which is available for purchase wherever books are sold, is based on original research by Jane Burman Powell and Lori Goldman Berthelsen. It retails for $50.
The 1986 best-picture nominee “A Room With a View” will be screened on July 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. and pre-show elements begin at 7 p.m.
The academy’s Science & Technology Council has launched a summer internship program designed to provide real-world experience to students interested in careers in computer graphics and animation technology.
Pixar Animation Studios, Rhythm & Hues Studios and Sony Pictures Imageworks will each provide an eight-week internship that gives students hands-on opportunities in animation, production management, software programming and visual effects.
The council will provide a stipend of $4,000 to each student.
